Seniors vs. Crime offers a variety of programs to our senior and other citizens.  One of the most popular programs today is the File of Life.  The File of Life consists of a red magnetic packet that contains a form to be filled out by the user.  This form when completed will provide information such as emergency contacts, medical data as well as any other medical problems you may have.  This file is to be placed on your refrigerator , in case of an emergency;  the responders can take it to the hospital thus informing the health care providers of your conditions and health status.  The File of Life is not only for seniors, we also provide it to any citizen with a need.  Also ask about the personal size File of Life to be carried in your purse or wallet.

At "Seniors vs. Crime" we pride ourselves in protecting our seniors as well as others in Clinton County.  One way we do this is by providing cell phones for seniors.  Used cellular telephones are donated to us by area citizens.  These phones are tested and checked out clearing out any and all old data.  These phones are then assigned to applicants to be used in case of an emergency to call 911.  The phones are unsubscribed so they can only be used for 911 emergency calls.  We take as much time as is needed to train our local seniors on the use of these phones.  To date we have distributed over 500 cellular phones in this program.

Seniors vs. Crime gives numerous presentations each year to senior groups.  At these presentations we cover such topics as Identity Theft, Consumer Fraud, Local scams, or provide information on Senior vs. Crime and what we do in our area.  If you or your group is interested in a presentation call our office to schedule one now.

MOST IMPORTANT IF YOU FEEL YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAS FALLEN FOR A SCAM OF SOME TYPE,

What is "Seniors vs. Crime"/TRIAD?

The program was started in September 1994 and to date is working out of the Clinton County Law Center.  Since its beginning, many presentations have been made to senior groups at local meal sites, church groups and other local service organizations.  Three seminars have been held which included speakers from the Iowa Attorney Generals Office, U.S. Postal Inspectors Office and the local fire and police departments.  In October 1996 Attorney General Tom Miller  signed the TRIAD agreement making Iowa the 45th State to do so.  November 21, 1996 saw Clinton County become the 7th county in Iowa to sign a local TRIAD agreement between the Camanche, Clinton and DeWitt Police Departments, the Clinton County Sheriff's Department and the local AARP Chapter.

It is a two-way effort between Clinton County Law Enforcement agencies and Seniors who agree to work together to reduce the criminal victimization of older citizens and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to Seniors of Clinton County.  It provides an opportunity for the exchange of information between law enforcement and senior citizens.  It focuses on reducing unwarranted fear of crime and improving the quality of life for seniors.

Why is "Seniors vs Crime"/ TRIAD Necessary?

Older Americans comprise the most rapidly growing segment of the population.  The older population - persons 65 and older - numbered 33.5 million in 1995.  That is 12.8% of the population, and about one in every 8 Americans.  In Clinton County, out of approximately 51,000 population 8,000 of them are 65 and older.  Iowa is the 1st in the nation with those 85 and older - 2nd with 75 older and 3rd with 65 and older.

Increased life expectancy is leading to new issues and problems for law enforcement as most communities experience an increase in the number of older persons.  In a recent survey conducted by "Seniors vs. Crime" /TRIAD it was found that burglary and telephone solicitors were among the top concerns of local seniors.  Fear and embarrassment are the main reasons crimes go unreported.  By providing a confidential liaison between law enforcement and seniors we can take one more step toward making a better quality of life for our seniors.  They helped make our community what it is today.  We owe it to them to provide as much assistance as we can to help provide that better quality of life.
