Annual Permit to Acquire Pistols or Revolvers - A permit to acquire authorizes the holder to acquire pistols and revolvers and long guns;  however, this does not authorize the holder to carry a weapon.  An Iowa permit to acquire pistols and revolvers shall be valid three days after the date of application and is valid for one year after the date of application (Code of Iowa, section 724.20) It is valid throughout the state.  Requires valid identification and the permit fee is $5.00

Nonprofessional Permit to Carry Weapons - A nonprofessional permit to carry authorizes the permit holder to carry weapons within the restrictions of the issuing officer.

The criteria for the Clinton County Sheriff's Office to issue new "carry concealed" permits follows the State of Iowa requirements with some exceptions:
               1.  Professional permits to carry will be issued to qualified applicants if their need to go armed is employment based and is a     critical
element in the protection of life and property.
               2.  Nonprofessional permits to carry will only be issued to:
                    a. Nonresident peace officers, correctional officers and other public officials who are currently employed full-time in the
                        administration of criminal justice.
                    b. Other residents with a demonstratable viable threat to themselves or their family as verified by a law enforcement agency
in the jurisdiction where the threat occurred.
                    c. Residents with verifiable business purposes.

Should you meet any of the above criteria and desire to apply for a "carry concealed" weapons permit, please fill out an "Application for Permit to Carry Weapons" form.  A criminal history background check will then be performed.  Persons that meet the criteria and are approved by the Sheriff will need to attend a safety class and pass a written test.  They will also be required to attend qualification course at the firing range and obtain a passing score.
