Clinton County Conservation Board

Lost Nation Public Hunting Area

Dedicated in August 1995, this 260 acre wildlife area has quickly become a favorite for local Pheasant Hunters. The Clinton CCB had help acquiring the land from the Clinton Izaak Walton League, Iowa Trappers Association and the Clinton & Cedar County Chapters of Pheasants Forever.

The Board Staff first burned off extensive field of brome grass...

in preparation for spraying with herbicide.

Then big bluestem, switchgrass and Indian grass were planted in it's place.

These are native prairie grasses that provide much better winter and nesting cover for pheasants and other wildlife.

To date, the Clinton CCB has replanted about 50% of the area to native grasses. There is also a seven and a one acre wetland. The site also has a small stream lined with large oaks and corn foodplots used by turkey, raccoon and white-tailed deer.
